CHAPTER 14

HEALTH

AVPs are usually willing to show or tell others about their external or physical pain. In so doing, they avoid sharing the internal pain they feel. They can overdwell on their anatomical issues. This ambivalent thinking can be self-defeating. And AVPs fear finality. Some patients have not had a recommended surgery, due to the finality of having the problem fixed.

The avoidant person’s gauging of their own body is flawed. Some avoidants are quick to seek treatment for their bodily concerns. The tensions they absorb have produced some very real problems. On the other hand, some avoidant persons tend to “ignore” these concerns until a significant health event occurs. As a group, they do need rest, less stressful environments, and dietary consistency, but they are not good at these following these restrictions.

The avoidant person does, at times, care for the self. Yet there are times they reject themselves and avoid care. There are times they are almost obsessional to narcissistic in their care, going from one extreme to another. The functioning avoidants do tend to follow specific treatments as prescribed. If they do exercise, they adhere fairly rigidly to a schedule. They take this into their body regulation pattern. It can become compulsive in their behavior. As such, even if injured, they may push to do the exercise as planned. They are literal in their self-dialogue: the message to self is, I need to do this or my regulation will be thrown off. Or, I’m good at this and it feels good.

Often prompting is needed to attend to medical needs. Eating is flawed. They may skip meals and work through their lunch hour. They subordinate their needs. They may eat healthy foods when they do eat.

Awareness is flawed, as they need consistency, minimal sugars, alcohol, and caffeine. A significant other can assist and probably does in this area. Overall, avoidants avoid, first and foremost. Their regulation patterns are their consistency. Prompting from a supportive person is helpful but not necessarily successful.

Oddities are part of the issue. They may eat bean soup for days because they avoid other foods. They may leave small amounts of food in the refrigerator for weeks to avoid dealing with it. They may make a large grocery purchase and not go to the store again for weeks, as this allows them to avoid and to regulate their environment. They may even routinely set up healthy mealtimes. The behavior in and of itself may not be the issue, but the reason or intent is odd. Everyone has some eccentricities and oddities. The significant issue for the avoidant person is the reasons behind these oddities.
